Zlata, 15 months was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), an abnormality of the heart that predominantly affects the right side of the heart and results in inadequate blood flow to the lungs for oxygenation. TOF is a combination of four congenital abnormalities: ventricular septal defect, pulmonary valve stenosis, a misplaced aorta and a thickened right ventricular wall. She had a shunt operation in November 2017 and ready for her final repair performed in Voronezh.

Fedya, 3 years old, was born with only one working pump in his heart (single ventricle heart disease). He had a Fontan operation and thereby was completing his third procedure, having had a stent placed in his PDA as a newborn, followed by a Glenn operation in September 2016. This was only the fourth Fontan performed in Voronezh, but the first done by local surgeon Dr Bykov.

Sofia is a six-year-old girl with a PDA (patent ductus arteriosus), a condition in which a blood vessel fails to close normally after birth. As a result, she has abnormal blood flow between the aorta and pulmonary artery. Dr. Sean Levchuck, Chairman of Pediatric Cardiology at Saint Francis Hospital, operated and closed the blood vessel using an amplatzer without the need for open-heart surgery.

One-year old Alisa was diagnosed a Ventricular Septal Defect – a hole between at wo pumping chambers and needed a repair of Transportation of the Great Arteries. The operation lasted over 7 hours and was complicated by significant bleeding. As a precaution his chest was left open in the ICU. After the bleeding subsided overnight, Dr. Bykov was able to close her chest the next day.

Evgeni is three years old and was born with heart disease. Without getting his mitral valve replaced, he would have gotten worse and may not have lived into adulthood. He was successfully operated at the Bakulev Center in Moscow.

Zakhar, four days old, has transposition of the great arteries, a severe congenital heart defect in which the two large arteries that carry blood out of the heart are connected to the heart abnormally not allowing him to get enough oxygenated blood. The semi-urgent procedure transposition of the great arteries is usually performed in the first weeks of life. Local surgeon Dr. Orlov performed the arterial switch operation in Nizhny Novgorod with supervision from Dr. Novick.

Vika, thirteen days old, has pulmonary atresia, a congenital birth defect of the pulmonary valve controlling blood flow to the lungs that did not form at all. She had had an urgent operation a few days prior to the fifth medical mission to Nizhny Novgorod, and was on a ventilator in the ICU where she required to be resuscitated. She had an emergency re-operation, where the previously placed shunt was narrowed stabilizing and rebalancing her circulation.

Misha was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), effectively half of a heart. He had been operated twice previously in April and December of 2014. Still considered inoperable in many developing centers, HLHS is the highest risk diagnosis of all cardiac defects. At two years and nine months of age, he underwent the final stage of his planned surgical strategy, a Fontan procedure - Stage 3 Norwood operation in Voronezh. Dr. Novick performed all three surgeries.

Two-year-old Roman was diagnosed with subaortic membrane, a shelf-like membrane that forms under the aortic valve. It causes obstruction to the flow of blood from the left ventricle into the aorta and results in blood going through turbulence. A doctor hears this as a heart murmur. He was operated on in Voronezh by Dr. Bykov and assisted by Dr. Greznov.

Daria, eleven days old, was diagnosed with Cyanotic Congenital Heart Disease. Nizhny Novgorod local surgeons Dr. Orlov and Dr. Shirokov performed the surgery. The next day she needed a reoperation and, even with the reoperation, she was discharged from the ICU just four days after her initial surgery.

Kostya, twelve years old, has lived with a ventricular septal defect – a hole between the wall that separates the lower heart chambers – since birth. If the defect was not repaired and the hole closed, Kostya risked heart failure, atrial fibrillation, pulmonary over-circulation, stroke, and in several years - death. He was successfully operated at the The Bakulev Center, in Moscow, without the need for open heart surgery using an occlude.

Anastasia, eleven years old, has lived with a hole in her heart - an atrial septal defect –commonly known as a hole in her heart. Fortunately, Saint Francis Heart Center accepted her and closed the blood vessel using an amplatzer without the need for open-heart surgery. Dr. Sean Levchuck, Chairman of Pediatric Cardiology at Saint Francis Hospital performed the procedure.

Arina, four years old, was born prematurely with bilateral fetal pneumonia and spent her first month of life in the hospital. She was discharged home but fell ill again and taken to the regional hospital. She was diagnosed with an aneurysm, an abnormal protrusion of the thinned portion of the heart, and an atrial septal defect. Surgeons at the Tomsk Cardiac Center successfully operated without the need for open heart surgery.

Alex, four years old, was diagnosed with atrioventricular canal, which affects two of the valves in the middle of the heart. His surgery was successfully performed in Nizhny Novgorod.

Timofei, two years old, was diagnosed with partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage, where some of the pulmonary veins carrying blood from the lungs to the heart flow into other blood vessels or into the heart's upper right chamber, instead of correctly entering the heart's upper left chamber. Timofei had an additional defect called Cor Triatiatum where an extra chamber inside the left collecting chamber can obstruct the return of blood from the lungs. He was operated in Voronezh.

Savva is one and a half years old. He was born with a severe congenital heart disease - hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a birth defect that affects normal blood flow through the heart. As the baby develops during pregnancy, the left side of the heart does not form correctly. Savva had his first two surgeries in Germany and successfully had his third surgery at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

Seven-month-old Dasha was born with a complex defect called transposition and a double outlet ventricle. Additionally, one side of her heart was too small. She underwent a Pulmonary Artery banding in Voronezh, a temporary operation, and will require repeated follow op by the NCA team.

Two-year-old Maxim was diagnosed with Double Outlet Right Ventricle, a complex defect which causes intermittent blue spells, and generally requires repair as early as possible. He underwent surgery in Voronezh. Maxim was on the ventilator for about 12 hours after his surgery and stayed in the ICU for a week, having several serious, but treatable complications.
