US Cardiologists Help Russian Colleagues Perform Complex Surgeries On Child Patients

A group of American pediatric cardiologists from the Cardiac Alliance has helped their Russian colleagues conduct several unique heart surgeries during a trip earlier this month to the Russian city of Voronezh, team leader Bill Novick told Sputnik on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (UrduPoint News / Sputnik - 30th October, 2018) A group of American pediatric cardiologists from the Cardiac Alliance has helped their Russian colleagues conduct several unique heart surgeries during a trip earlier this month to the Russian city of Voronezh, team leader Bill Novick told Sputnik on Tuesday.

"Uniqueness is that we performed two Fontan operations. This is the final in a series of operations for individuals who only have one ventrical," Novick said.

In previous Cardiac Alliance trips to Voronezh, only visiting doctors performed such operations. "But now local surgeons performed everything by themselves, and they did it great," Novick said.

This month's visit was the 11th Cardiac Alliance trip to Voronezh, and team members completed 11 complex cases in two weeks.

Novick, a world famous pediatric heart surgeon who has performed surgeries on children across the globe, said the group's cooperation with Voronezh continues to advance.

"While I was in Voronezh on this trip, I met with regional healthcare officials. We had a conversation about creating a pediatric cardiac service division within the cardiac surgery department at the local hospital," he said. "They agreed with this completely and asked local physicians to put together a plan for a pediatric cardiac service department."

Novick said that if plans to create a pediatric center in Voronezh advance, the Cardiac Alliance would extend its project in the city for another three years to ensure that the facility is "completely on track."

The Cardiac Alliance has previously undertaken several projects in Russia, including in the cities of Voronezh and Nizhny Novgorod.
